To make this box I started off by making the Ribbon Banding which is made out of Holly, Wenge, Walnut, & Maple Hardwoods.
The background veneer is Karelain birch burl and the Marquetry is the same Holly, Wenge, Walnut, & Maple but in veneers. This really helped everything blend together.
The box size is 4 1/4″ tall x 14 1/2″ wide x 8 1/2″ deep Here is a list of a few techniques that I used to make this box.
The Ribbon Banding,is cut out of solid woods then glued together then cut into thin banding. This is a great way to match up the veneers, to the Ribbon Banding on the complete box, which really helps give a rich uniformed color scheme.
Box Veneering both sides of one 1/2″ thick small piece of plywood, then using a V Groove router bit to give instance uniformed miters on all edges of the box. Then just make a bottom and glue the box together.
The Window Method of Cutting Marquetry or Parquetry. By simply using a Knife or Scalpel and cutting out the insert into the background veneer. This method is quiet easy as far as set up time goes but takes a little longer to cut then on a scroll saw.
The feet and pull are a segmented turning, by making a glue jig then gluing eight pieces of hardwood and eight pieces of veneer together. Then turned on the lathe.
