Lutyens Garden Bench design by Tony O’Malley
Plans for this Lutyens Bench were purchased from Tauton Press #011201. It was designed by Tony O’Maley whoes article appeared in the July/August 2000 issue of “Fine Woodworking”. My bench was cut from rough sawn 4/4, 8/4 and 12/4 select cypress. I used the full sized drawings of the crest rail, front and back legs to create exact templates of those parts for bandsawing and finish routing. This was the most complicated piece I have completed in my woodworking hobby. You can do the math but there were alot of mortises, loose tenons, and holes to drill for dowel joints. I dry fitted it to make sure everything aligned before gluing. Gluing was a panic operation for me since I am not used to working against the clock. Eventhough I was using a slow setting epoxy, I was sweating to get it clamped up in about 70 minutes. I usually do not like to paint my projects but my wife wanted it painted for use on our front porch. Actually, it helped, because I was able to cover minor minor flaws and epoxy squeeze out that hardens to “glass” after a few hours. Was it worth? You bet. Creation of something is man’s most rewarding activity.

Great looking project tgoebel. Well done.
I have thought about this magnificent piece of outdoor furniture since I read the FWW article back in 2000. It will be a nice piece to make as my first project in my new workshop which is expected to be operational toward the end of the year. Thanks for posting.
