Pencil Post Bed (built from one of Fine Woodworkings many plans. )
This bed was built from Fine Woodworking plans. I took the photos before I stained and waxed the bed frame. I believe this project to be a higher skill level project. I ordered the paper plans as they give you some full scale patterns to work from. I suggest for projects of this size that you always order paper plans. If you follow the plans exactly. This is a great project. I suggest making patterns for all of the parts that you can. They will help in making future beds. The mortise and tenon joints accompanied by bed bolts are the strongest possible joints. These also make it possible to knock down and reassemble. The headboard panel is not permanent. It’s in a floating mortise so that it’s easy to move upstairs. I chose Mahogany as it finished well and is so easy to work with and it would fit the time period of the bed well. All in all a fun rewarding project as are all projects available through this website. I changed one area where it said to hand plane the tapered sides. I carefully ran each post through the joiner. To the lines previously drawn as per plans.
