Built-in Cherry Chimney Cabinet
The built-in chimney cabinet is of my own design, with brass hardware and made of North American cherry, finished with an oil/varnish rubbed on finish. It was constructed with an integral fireplace surround, frame and raised-panel, with fluted columns, also in cherry.
The cabinet construction took approximately 200 hours to complete in my basement workshop. The most challenging aspect of the whole project was the coving at the top of the upper cabinet, made on the tablesaw from 8/4 cherry, to exactly match the plaster coving around the ceiling edge.
The cabinet back, sides and shelf in the base cabinet are mainly cherry veneered plywood edged with cherry, and with 1/4″ glass shelving in the upper cabinet.
The upper cabinet has four identical glass panels in cherry arched frames, the outer frames being fixed and the inner frames hinged doors. The cabinet has lighting fitted in the top and includes a little detail carving to provide some added interest and to help break up the straight lines of the cabinet.
The base cabinet is constructed with an 8/4 solid cherry top to mirror the design of the upper cabinet, three drawers above three raised arched panel doors and a column of five smaller drawers.
The drawers are all constructed with solid cherry fronts, bevelled on the tablesaw, with cedar sides and backs using dovetail construction.
The base cabinet has a single interior shelf of cherry veneered plywood, edged with cherry, and raised-panel arched frame doors, a double hinged door on the left side of the cabinet with a single door on the right side.
The raised panels and door frames were made on the router table.
