bar and bar stools
I wanted to finish off a kitchen remodel I did for my daughter and son-in-law with a nice bar and bar stools between the kitchen and living room. We were trying to come up with an idea when I came across a video from Fine Woodworking about a cool cutting board idea. If you do a search for “fine woodworking cutting board” you will find a video from Scott Lewis a Canadian woodworker. It show the process it takes to create the curved stripes that are in the bar top and bar stool seats. IF you notice the pattern is the same from bar top to stool seats, I did that by duplicating the glue ups (two exactly the same). Once I was done with the two main glue ups I laid out and cut out the three seats out of the second glue up. When I was at the lumber supply store I couldn’t pass up the curly maple that’s in the skirts and spindles of the stools. It was one of those wood whispering things, calling me to use them in my project, I just couldn’t pass it up. The little purple heart in the spindle is also in the bar top, it’s one of those things that goes way back to when my daughter was a small child. I had made her a rocking horse and instead of signing it I did a heart inlay instead. I want to give credit to Bryon Sande Photography for the excellent pictures he took of this project.

Awesome. Funny thing: I was getting on FW to look up the cutting board article because I'm thinking about using the technique on a dining table. You've given me a boost of confidence! I love the way you broke up the pattern on the bar stools. Really nice. thanks for sharing. Trent.
Amazing. It really takes Scott's idea to the next level. Can You please tell me what is the thickness of the stripes You inserted? How thin did You have to plane them?
Mind-blowing piece of work and shows some true artistry. Really like the contrasting colors of the wood. Can you tell us what wood was used to achieve that red color?
Very nice. Wow...Thank you Scott for sharing with the world. I must say, I tried to plane thin pieces on my 15 inch Powermatic planer and all it did was chew it up. So unhappy. So how do I plane thin boards? There must be a way. I've watched your video many times, and you seem to do ok. Help would be much appreciated. Thanks for your time. Keep up the amazing work. You have got a talent.
