From workbench to storage cabinet
This tool and hardware cabinet started out as my primary workbench circa 1992, when I shared work space with a washer and dryer, laundry sink, and a water heater in a one car garage (2nd pic).
Then it followed me into my new shop in 2007 and got some drawers added; but still needed drawer facings.
Now that I’ve built a real workbench, it’s transformed into a storage cabinet. Because I hate to waist space, I made the drawers much shallower (in height), allowing more drawers to fill otherwise dead space. The shallowest drawers are 2 1/16″ in height overall. Very few tools measure more than 1 3/4″ in their smallest dimension.Drawer facings are C grade southern yellow pine. I made the drawer pulls out of some water (white) oak that I felled in ’08 and made my new bench out of. I made sure to make the pulls ergonomic as possible (5th pic). My index finger hooks under them nice and firm.
Now, enjoying my extra storage space, and looking for things to put in it! There must be some tools I still need!!

I am always very impressed when I see home made storage work benches. I'm not quite that good with wood as I am with engines and machinery so I have to give credit where credit is due!
There are actually many possibilities that we can achieve with our furniture units if we think out of the box and be creative enough to come up with innovations. This is especially true with storage cabinets that are very versatile in producing new products out of old items. A little refurbishing and you have a completely new object.
