The overall design for this desk was to create a desk that could be folded up and out of the way. It is my take of a secretarie style desk. The desk surface occupied in the tall fall flat keeps the user far enough from the desk that there is no interaction between kneecaps and drawer fronts. It also means a deep writing surface, but shallow cabinet when folded.
This was my first exploration in veneered work, which I implemented using a post and panel construction. The panels are shop sawn veneers of acacia and chestnut slip matches. The composition of the veneers in this work focuses on two dark streaks I found in a plank of acacia. One dark growth ring caused two distinct lines that I used to create direction and harmony within and between shapes.
