Ravenwood Wine Hutch
I live in Oregon’s wine country and wanted to create a unique wine cabinet made largely from local woods. This design is a blend of different design styles and elements. I wanted a design to highlight the different woods and the beautiful unique grain patterns that are found in this particular timbers.
The top and legs are Red gum eucalyptus. The top is quarter sawn and reveals a beautiful quilted character. These boards were harvested from a large tree that came down in a public park in northern California about 10 years ago.
The face and back splash are QS Black oak from the Applegate Valley in southern Oregon. I did my best to match the grain in a continuous flow. The medullary rays created a nice sinewave across the front panels.
The side and back panels are an oak veneered Appleply. I chose to use Appleply father than create framed panels to give the cabinet a cleaner look.
The interior elements are made from Sugar Pine. These timbers came from a very old tree which came down on private property here in the Applegate Valley back in late 1980s. The boards are so unique for pine that I often find it hard to use them, but this project warranted their use. You can see the tight grain, and tiger stripe figure on the drawer front. Hard to believe it’s pine.
