Japanese Inspired Chest and Vanity
This first attempt at a cabinet was inspired by traditional Japanese Tansu. I resawed 10 inch wide, 8/4 sapele planks to achieve bookmatched top and sides, and grain matched dividers and drawers. The sliding doors are koa, and the drawer fronts behind them are curly hard maple. The design features antique copper drawer pulls and an antique vanity drawer lock. The chest includes one drawer shortened to accomodate a secret box (claro walnut). An excellent local copper artist (http://cargocollective.com/jenniferdegroat) fabricated the drawer-pull backing plates. The backing plate and carving motifs are traditional Japanese. The work was finished with one application of Penofin followed by polishing and a final application of furniture wax. I made many mistakes with this first use of a bandsaw, router table and carving tools, and learned a lot about woodworking by fixing/hiding them.
