Peruvian Walnut Hope Chest
This hope chest was commissioned by my mother-in-law to be a heirloom wedding gift for my sister-in-law. The entire piece is made of solid peruvian walnut, except for the tongue & groove cedar panels lining the bottom. All of the joinery is mortise and tenon. Each of the panels are 13/16″ thick sitting in 1/4″ grooves. The panels feature a 3/8″ cove on the face side, and an 1/8″ roundover on the inside faces. My design influence was the cove profile, so you will notice gentle curves throughout. Although the chest is mostly square, the curves on the lid, bottom rails, and feet soften the overall look. I finished the piece with a coat of oil, one coat of shellac, and three coats of water based polyurethane. Lastly, I applied a thin coat of furniture wax and buffed the chest to a low sheen
