Corset Dining Table – Taylor Donsker
We are lucky to work with such stunning slabs of live edge California Claro Walnut. Being that we are also located in California, we have access to the most stunning and properly kiln dried slabs in the nation.
And, most of our clients are after just that, a flawless slab of highly figured Claro Walnut. Who can blame them? We’ve worked with several of these slabs and the moment the finish hits the surface we begin to drool, and sweat as we hand rub and buff, while admiring the remarkable figure and colors that Claro reveals.
So, when our client specifically requested a slab full of natural imperfections and an entire edge of punky, decayed wood, I was initially shocked and tried to push them toward a more flawless slab. Fortunately they would not budge and we were forced to come up with a solution that would make this table functional while still maintaining the beauty of the decayed edge.
The concept that I came up with was that of a glass jewelery box. The glass protects, yet allows viewers to maintain sight of the beautiful contents. Our “corsets”, our patented take on the classic butterfly joint, are made of brass that is machined and then polished. They symbolize the jewelery amongst the wonderfully decayed edge. Along the edge they rise from the decayed edge to support the cantilevered bronze glass top. Bronze glass was specifically chosen to complement the natural colors of the wood and not take away from it’s natural beauty.
I am extremely excited to share this with all of you, and hopefully inspire you all to work with “flawed” wood. This piece aligns well with our mantra, “Perfection is momentary, blemishes are forever.”
