Table for Circular Entry Hall
A practical display table with drawer space was desired for our home’s circular entry hall. The goal was to design an elongated table with curvature blending into the space and yet to maintain the rectilinear sense of Arts Crafts Prairie or Greene & Greene styles for consistency with neighboring room furniture. So beginning with the design of a prior Federal style entry table project, I morphed it in the desired directions. The top back edge curvature and matching front edge blend with the wall, extra overhang with under-bevel is added, and the Blacker House style leg bottoms were added to mildly tapered legs. A broken form, graduated, pencil rail was embedded into the top and Arts & Crafts drawer pulls were utilized.
The table is 46 inches long, 34 inches high, and 20 inches deep at the center line of the overhanging top. All show parts and panels are solid cherry, the 6 inch deep drawers are maple, and the interior runners, guides, and kickers are maple. Walnut was used for the top rail trim. The cherry parts are stained with GF Antique Cherry stain and exterior surfaces are finished with many coats of Waterlox Original. With an added coat of wax, hopefully the top will withstand the light usage it will get at the front door.
