Piano Bench
This piano bench is a response to the somewhat problematic design paradigm of a typical piano bench, which requires the pianist to stand up from the bench to lift the hinged top in order to extract the sheet music that is stored inside. The design is thus catered to the seated musician, allowing him or her several options to store music within the bench’s cavity without having to leave their poised seated position. Music storage occurs in the form of an open cubby on one face and a hinged panel to reveal a concealed cubby on the other face.
The simple form and material palette of the dark peruvian walnut and the light maple is an abstraction of the alternating black and white keys of a piano. Just as the white piano keys continue unbroken along the length of the keyboard, the grain of the maple continually flows around mitered corners from horizontal surfaces to vertical surfaces. The joinery of the piece is all concealed domino and biscuit joints to eliminate any exposed fasteners.
