Beehive Light Pendant with Unique Lamp Base
The beehive light pendant is the result of my desire to use every part of the tree I possibly can and still produce a hand made, functional, and artistic product. The translucent rings of wood that are the building blocks of the pendant are thick hand plane shavings from pieces of firewood which I shave and mold by hand. The pendant gives off a warm light that is not achievable in any other lighting material. The pendant assembly is very light and sturdy.
The beehive pendant shown in the photos is mounted to a custom floor lamp made from a hand selected branch of white oak and then steam bent to the shape you see in the photos. The base block and riser are truly one of a kind and can not be reproduced exactly. I let the wood dictate the design. You can clearly see the large crack in the base that dictated the installation of keys to stabilize. The base is supported by four short legs mortised into the base which allows the electrical wiring to be routed from the bottom in any direction. The riser is mortised all the way through the base and secured with a removable pin allowing the riser to be separated from the base
The wiring is custom, 18 gauge twisted-pair light brown cloth covered wire.
This is one of ten unique light pendant and base designs that I recently began making from material that most would consider useless, or useful as firewood. Stay tuned to my shop for additional lighting designs or visit my website to view in-process construction photos of all 10 different pendants and floor stands.
