workbench
I built this workbench to augment my furniture building and replace a flimsey inadequate Sears bench. The design is an amalgum of ideas from Kenney, Schleining, Pirnik, and Hack. The trestle-style base is laminated birch and black ash with draw-bore tenons. The top is 24 X 60, 3 inches thick with a 3 x 5-1/2 bolster on three sides. The height is co-planar with my machinery. I build a 4 drawer tool storage unit following Schleining/Pernik design for the not-so-big bench. I left open space to the left of the drawers for bench hooks. Finish is shellac and varnish on the base, shellac on the top. The vise is a L-N 12-inch twin screw. Rockler cam toggles secure an adjustable height planing stop. Dog holes are minimal–one for the ourboard end of a vise clamped plane stop (and dowel former die); another on the front bolster for long, wide parts.
