A commission piece for a friend wanting an asian style, low profile display cabinet for her art pieces. The display case itself is enclosed within a mahogany framework mimicing a Tori gate comprised of heavy ” hashira ” posts connected by upper and lower “nuki”rails and separated by half a dozen upper and lower cross pieces.
The shadow box display case “floats” within the frame supported and suspended on the cross pieces by a dozen stub supports. All joints in the supporting stucture and support system are mortise and tennon. The back panels of the display cabinet are veneered with redwood burl and the interior is lit with three LED pucks. Additional display capacity is provided by a glass shelf above the case supported between the front and rear “simaki’ pieces.
The piece is stained with brown mahogany gel over red oak oil and finished with multiple coats of semi-gloss polyurethane.
