My First Woodworking Workbench
I built my first real woodworking workbench based on an article by Bob Van Dyke in FW #223, with some modifications. I made the bench base out of standard pressure treated, kiln dried, lumber. The legs are 4×4’s, the side and end stretchers are 1″ thick, I added a sliding deadman and a shelf. It has both a front & end vise (end is a rejuvinated vintage 10″ Craftsman Vise, front is a new 10″ Jorgensen Rapid Acting Vise). Behind the bench in the photo is one of my first projects all wrapped up and ready to go back home – a repair job on an antique secretary (family heirloom) that belongs to a good friend. The glue is failing due to age & well, the glue back then just wasn’t as good as today’s. As a result the base was falling apart. I raplaced some missing (fallen off) braces and a missing drawer runner, cleaned all the joints, glued & clamped it all together and…violla, it should last another 100 years. Now all my friends and family are telling me I should go into the repair & re-finishing business. Hmmm…I think I’ll think about that. Oh yeah, the planes on the shelf are all rejuvinated vintage Type 11 (1910-1918) Stanley Planes. BEWARE OF DOG
