Biedermeier Sideboard
This sideboard is a house-warming gift I made for my son and his family. I designed it based on Biedermeier furniture (mid 19th century Austria), whose classic simplicity seems to work well in contemporary as well as traditional settings. The mahogany carcase and doors are solid lumber or re-sawn veneer; the case back is veneered plywood. Drawers are hand dovetailed with central dovetail guides. The door rails are veneered with matching vetrical grain veneer that flows from the bottom drawers up through the door rails to the upper drawers. Biedermeier case drawers usually had no pulls, relying instead on lock keys to draw out the drawers. The tassels serve to find the misplaced keys! Black and gold paint provided the other finishes.

That's a beautiful piece. I love the attention you gave to the flow of the grain up the drawers. Are the top and trim the mahogany as well and stained darker or another species? Same question about the columns? Ebonized? And it appears you guided the bases and capitals, too. Outstanding work.
Beautiful piece with some extras that really add to the piece. Great job!!
Spectacular! I'm a huge fan of Biedermeier and don't think we see it enough in this country. Extremely well done proportions. Some modern versions (and older ones too) are too heavy or too light. You nailed this one.
I love it!
The black bits are painted, satin black enamel, steel wooled, buffed and waxed. The gold column bases and capitals were painted gold, no further treatment. These elements of the piece are the most vulnerable to wear / dings / etc. I distressed them a tad to condition my son and his wife to the idea that the piece will age with time, and the aging is both inevitable and to be welcomed.
Very impressive woodwork.
