Wenge, Sapele, and Zebrawood raised Platform bed
I decided it was time to make a new King bed for the Master Bedroom with all the fixins’. Headboard and bedside tables mount to the wall with french cleats. I really like exploring the use of negative space. The bedroom now feels as though it transports me to a different world. For the headboard I made a sapele lap jointed frame and attached wide planks of wenge to it. Behind the scenes you would be surprised how intense the joinery is. The headboard measures 11feet long and breaks down to the individual board. The joinery and design of the headboard took me a while to figure out since this is only the 3rd piece of furniture that I have ever made, but by the time I got to the bedframe and bedside tables it was all downhill. When I go in the bedroom I feel like I am getting aquainted with a dear old friend. Easily the best upgrade I’ve ever done in the house. I really learned the value of properly dimensioning lumber on this project. The 45 degree mitered 8/4 Sapele bedframe was joined with a festool Domino joiner and also splined with Wenge. It just didn’t seem complete until I put an arc in the bedside rails where I also learned for the 1st time how to do a bent lamination of Wenge and added that accent to the lower sides. When opening a drawer, I want to be able to get excited and that is why I used zebrawood for the drawer boxes. Loved this project… I don’t feel like a novice anymore…more like an intermdieate woodworker with a lot more confidence.
