Walnut Live Edge Benches; Turned Solid Walnut Legs
Bench #1 is 58″L x 15″Wx16″ Height.
Bench #2 is 28″L x 15″W x 16″ Height.
Benches will sit in a home foyer as companion pieces.
Turned the solid walnut legs on my Delta lathe with 1″ dia. tenons.
Legs are wedge tenoned into the slab. Wedges are hard maple.
Bench #1 has a 2 1/4″ x 2 1/4″ x 45″ long stretcher glued and screwed to its underside to prevent bowing. Even though the slab is 1 1/4″ thick an adult sitting in the middle will bow it slightly. Because of the low height, the stretcher is not visible until you look under the bench. The shorter bench did not require a stretcher.
I made a drilling jig for the compound angle drilled holes. Trial & error established the right angles. Once you have drilled enough pilot holes in scrap boards, mark the hole you want to act as a bushing and clamp the scrap board in place on the slab. I used a Forstner bit in a hand drill. I drilled eight holes with only slight wear in the pilot hole.
Finish is multiple coats of clear gloss polyurethane.
