Futon; Craftsman Style; White Oak
Craftsman style futon made entirely of white oak. Very time consuming because of all the mortises required and the need for accurate layout of same.
The futon raises and lowers via a dogleg recess which locks the back of the futon in place in the sitting position and allows the back to slide effortlessly to the fold-out position. I made a jig for the dogleg and used a router and guide bushing for accuracy.
The finish is Danish Oil because it is ‘no fuss-no muss’. Absolutely necessary when you have all the spaces and crevices for other types of finish to give you a hard time.
The futon was made to fit a very nice WalMart mattress that cost about $145.00.
If you plan on making one, be sure to buy the mattress before you begin construction.
