Pennsylvania Tall Case Clock
This design was first offered to me through FWW contributor Lonnie Bird, who inspired me to modify his design to fit my 12 chime movement. That required a deeper case, and, since the dial face was also of different dimensions, the dial face frame needed modifying as well. In fact, none of the measurements are as posted on Mr Bird’s article, although I did keep the proportions nearly the same. I elected to shorten the pediment face above the dial slightly, and made the waist door and base medalion slightly larger in relationship to the case. The wood chosen is quarter sawn northern white oak, with quilted quartered used for the hood, waist door, and base front. I started with about 160 ft of 8/4 stock, and had to resaw every piece!. (I used less than half) I’ll never do that again! My reasoning was that several components are 7/8″ thick, and some are over 1-1/4″, so I was trying to minimize lamination. With that order, only one piece included had the quilted figure. The finish started with custom blended dye colors to mimic a golden brown. Once dry, I used an early american oil stain to overcoat the dye color, which really popped the quartered figure. After that cured, a light coat of boiled linseed oil, then three or four coats of shellac finished the job. The dial face is by Johann Jaeckle of the Black Forest Germany, and the works are Hermle, also of that region.
