Walnut Burl Executive Desk
I made this desk to replace one that I had bought at Office Max. I actually designed it to be very similar to the one I had. The desk took me 2 years and around 125 hours to build. I added 3 inches of width in the middle where I sit. On my old desk I constantly clunked my knee when I stood up. The extra 3 inches fixed that problem really well. I used frame and panel contruction on the main boxes. I dovetailed the drawers and used a jig (I know… not quite as cool). The top of the desk is a 4 way bookmatch of some burl veneer I had. I finished the main desk body with a french polish. I used poly on the top (I wanted as much durability as I could get). I lined the drawers with vinyl that is a brown snakeskin pattern. The drawer on the lower left has hanging files in it. The drawer on the lower right is just really big 🙂 no hanging files. I bookmatched the panel on the front of the desk against each other. It looks kinda wierd to have 2 panels betweent them, but I thought the 2 end panels looked like a guy flexing his muscles so I put them on the ends. The best part of the whole thing is this. The first day it was in my office I had to have somebody sign paperwork. I could hear her pressing really hard when she signed. I didn’t think anything of it. I looked later that afternoon and sure enough, the top of my desk now has POA 8-22-2016 etched in the finish:(. The desk now has glass on top of it.
