Roman Chair, 2017. Study in curved lamination.
I designed and started this chair at the “Curvature Workshop” at the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship in September, 2016. Class was taught by Tim Rousseau
(FW Dec., 2016, FW Feb., 2017), and by British woodworker, Tom Kealy. This was my 10th workshop at the center spread over 12 summers beginning in 2004.
Tip: At the workshop I resawed the laminates on the bandsaw, completing about half over the 2 week class. When I returned to LA and my own shop, I used a thin curf blade on my table saw and found there was no extra wood waste since I did not need to joint and thickness plane each laminate. Each curved piece, composed of a stack of 10 laminates was then forced into an MDF designed template and clamped as glue dried overnight. Back pieces, mortise and tenon into seat. Designed for a red seat cushion.
