Chest of Drawers.
Being a lumber Inspector for over 12 years I collected wood, in particular figured lumber. So i have a barn filled with the most beautiful wood from all over the north east. Yellow birch, black cherry, hard maple, soft maple, red and white oak, american beech, and white ash.
Sometimes I’ll build a piece with some wood from my collection. I have had this soft maple for awhile now and decided on building a chest of drawers.
the 2 side panels, drawer fronts, drawer dividers, and top are quilted soft maple. The frame is quarter sawn sapele. Walnut was to dark for the tinge of soft maple. Sapele has a reddish burgundy color to it.
The drawer sides and back are black cherry, with a eastern red cedar for drawer bottoms.
All wooden slides and kickers to support drawers made with black walnut.
Drawer dividers are quartered quilted soft maple, as the radial flecks are very pronounced.
The 2 back panels are wormy hard maple something also from my collection. There was no sense putting something spectacular where it would be hidden.
Joinery is all mortise and tenon, drawer dividers dovetailed into legs, dovetails in drawers front and back, and top front apron is dovetailed into the top of leg which will never be seen. Skeleton inside was made to fit space with all half lap joinery fastened with screws in slotted screw holes.
The finish is 2 coats hand rubbed oil, followed with hand rubbed urethane, and hand rubbed wax on top of that. Took sometime to build as I had to build in between other projects.
