Chessboard and Storage Box

Top is shop-sawn 3/32″ thick maple and Honduras mahogany glued to 1/2″ Baltic birch plywood. Ebony/maple/ebony “pinstripes” on the top are solid wood and go all the way through to the underside. Letter and number strips (made by a sign shop) are cork-backed and removable. Box and feet are sipo and ebony. Divider material for the chess pieces is semi-rigid crepe shoe sole material. Hinges are from Rockler, lid stays from Brusso. Brass tray pulls were hand-made from sheet brass, as was the plaque that reads, “To Parker, Love Grandpa 2017.”

Cork-backed letter and number strips simply sit on the edges of the board, making their use optional.
