Vine Table II
This occasional table was inspired by an earlier version that was taller and was designed as a display table. The top is of Zebrawood, the base and legs are Walnut, and the drawer is Maple. The combination of the Zebrawood’s 3D effect, the Dragonfly pull, and the vine legs that encircle and support the table combine to create a nature theme.
The Zebrawood top is formed by four mitered triangles to create the 3D effect. The joinery is reinforced with hidden splines to ensure the strength of the end grain joints. The drawer face is mitered to 45 degrees to create a flush fit with the table’s side rails. The angle also makes the drawer align exactly with the table’s sides. The drawer has a stop to prevent accidental removal.
The trim at the bottom of the table’s sides acts as the rails for the drawer and locks the table’s sides into place. The table’s sides and the lower trim are reinforced with Walnut keys.
The vine shaped legs wrap the table and provide vertical support. The legs are attached at the top with mortises and tenons to the table sides. The lower shelf is attached to the legs with pocket hole joinery.
The table was sanded to 220 grit and finished with 5 coats of wipe-on polyurethane. The final finish coat was wet sanded with 1,000 grit. A final coat of wax was applied.
The table measures 15 1/2″ x 15 1/2″ x 25″.
