Bronze and Rosewood Thumb Plane
The body and cap for this small bronze plane was cast in a sand mold formed using a custom created pattern. The dimensions of the main body are 1-3/4″ wide by 4-5/8″ long and the overall length is 6″. The wooden infill pieces are Cochen Rosewood and were attached to the casting using epoxy and brass pins.
The cap thumbscrew is also cast bronze fabricated from the waste bronze created by the casting sprue. The thumbscrew was turned to size, threaded, and knurled on a metal lathe. The steel adjustment knob and screw were also turned, threaded and knurled on a metal lathe. The adjustment screw has a very fine 1/4″ x 48 threads per inch which allows a tight adjustment in the cutting depth.
The blade was purchased commercially and modified to fit the plane using a Dremel tool to form the slot for the adjustment knob.
