Nakashima Inspired Floor Lamp
All design credit goes to the great George Nakashima. Ingenious design & proportions. I have tried to copy his proportions using photos. I would love to know exactly how they build theirs. My post is a wedged double tenon. Toggle switch is mounted on the back of the post where the wire exits the hollow post to get to the socket. Rings are steam bent, allowed to dry, then glued, sanded, & fitted to the frame. The bending forms for the rings is also used to make the round frames. Top & bottom frame is a half-lap connected by uprights. The outside decorative uprights are screwed to the frame from the inside. Socket is mounted to a wood block using a thread tap that matches lamp industry standards. The toughest part, & not something available from old photos, is how the frame mounts to the post (round frame with exterior rings mounted to a square post). I chose to just screw it from the back with spax screws. If I make more I may make a flat on my bending forms where the back of the round frame will have a flat to mate to the post. The gap that the rings create where they wrap around the post has to be accounted for either way. I’m sure Nakashima had a creative solution for this & I would love to know how he did that.
