William Whitehead Card Table, c. 1810
Federal period furniture has always had that ‘wow’ factor for me, and this table looked like a great challenge with its complex stringing, banding, paterae, and hammering large areas of crotch mahogany. It took lots of research at the SFSU library, in back issues of FWW, and elsewhere for construction methods, along with lots of experimentation and mistakes. I went through four sets of legs before finally getting the stringing right on the fifth set, but the flower paterae came out well on the first try.
