Atlas Coffee Table
I built this coffee table as part of an independent study in the Architecture department at Penn State University. It was a lesson in iteration (sketches, CAD drawings, and MDF prototypes) and creative jig making to handle all the curves. The eight pieces of the base are made of bent-laminated maple, and the cherry top has a two-axis curve on the underside cut by CNC. Two concealed steel splines join the base together, and the top is floated using steel rod and tubing.

Sporter, Impressed! I can't figure out how you joined the 8 base pieces to support a fairly leveraged load on the joint. what did the steel spline offer that a wood did not?
