Owl Chair
· In the last few years, I have been working in Baltic Birch Plywood and exploring organic shapes and the effects the individual plywood layers have on the look and feel of my furniture. This chair came about after much experimentation on cut up and left over Baltic birch plywood from another project. I started with simpler shapes like corbels for a shelf i was building and got more complex as i went on. This chair is made up of 3 layers of Baltic Birch Plywood pattern cut to rough shape and then sculpted to final form using hand grinders and lots of sanding. The dark plugs are made of Purple Heart sawdust and epoxy. The shape of the back was more reminiscent of an open book until the “eyes” appeared during the grinding process, which told me it was time to stop grinding. I also had been seeing an owl in a certain tree on my morning walks, so the chair named itself. this took well over 600 hours to complete
