A tea cabinet with asian accents
I wanted to build something special for our Son and his fiance on their marriage. They live in a small Manhattan flat, so it couldn’t be too big. They love trying and collecting interesting teas – so, designing something that would help get those organized seemed to be a good way to give them a gift that could win the “war for space”.
The piece has Purpleheart “feet” so that it can be placed on a table top. But, I built in a french cleat so that it can be hung. The wall mount was built to push the piece out from the wall so that it appears to “float”. Hard to capture that in a picture, but it is a nice effect – and, frees up valuable counter space.
The Padauk ship-lapped panels on the back add a rich red accent without grabbing too much attention. I chose it because I read that red is considered a “lucky” color in China and Japan – Padauk is often used for chopsticks.
I’m happy with the balance and composition of the piece. One sentimental touch was using some Purpleheart that I had kept from when we closed out my father’s estate several years ago – something I know will be meaningful to my son.
Truly a labor of love.
