Red Oak Chest
About 15 years ago, I had the good fortune to acquire a cottage overlooking Lake Michigan. The house was built in the 1930’s by Swedish immigrant craftsmen who incorporated a number of unusual woodwork details. They also built several pieces of furniture for the house that are distinctive and still very functional. Their work incorporated flowing curves in places that are ordinarily rectilinear, and I’ve used that motif in this piece.
When I took over the house, I was inspired to build furniture in keeping with the quality and aesthetic used by those craftsmen. At this point, I’ve built about 30 pieces for the house, ranging from beds and tables to mirrors and lamps. To say this experience has upped my furniture making game would be a huge understatement.
I hope that this chest, and the other pieces I’ve built for the house, will continue to serve for generations to come.
