Hayrake Table and Benches
Fine Woodworking Unlimited has proven to be a tremendous benefit in both the design inspiration and the methods used to build each of the projects. Having access to the articles and videos that detailed the construction techniques was invaluable, its like having access to an instructor all of the time.
The Hayrake table was expanded to a full 7 feet long. I built the top from quarter sawn white oak and the legs, stretcher and aprons from ash. I followed the videos by Michael Peckovich carefully to learn the details of construction
The benches were modified from the size shown in the article by Daniel Chaffin in issue #207 . I made the benches 7 feet long to fit the table and used the same combination of wood as in the table, the seating surface was quartersawn white oak and the legs and stretchers were of ash.
In both projects, I used drawbored mortise and tenon joinery in assembling the legs and stretchers. the seating surface and tabletop were attached with wood clips and screws.
My brother Frank did the photograpy. Nikon D810, Nikkor 24-70 2.8E, f/13, 1/160, ISO 64. Two flashpoint EXPLOR 600 WITH Paul Buff 86” white umbrella and 30×60 softbox. Background backlit with 2 White Lightning X800s and LiteMod Barndoors. I used two Westcott 9 x 20′ Wrinkle-Resistant Polyester Backdrops. The space was around 11ft square with low ceilings and protruding obstacles, including a kitchen island about 18” behind the background.. It was not possible to get all of the wrinkles out or avoid shooting off of the background in that space so I used frequency separation and Gaussian Blur in Photoshop.
