The thing that boggles my eyeballs first is the hexagonal column against the 4-sided base. I think your idea of turning the column round would help a lot.
Also the column and base look sturdy enough to park a truck on. Think about ways to make them look less massive. I know the marble top must be heavy, but you could get away with more delicate-looking base parts. Maybe cut a longitudinal piece out of each foot so that it would be two parallel feet--same length, but not so much material. (Hard to describe) Hope this helps.

I love the simplicity! I believe adding anything would make it too busy, too hard on the eyes.
I don't care for the idea of a round column. Way too conventional for my taste.
If it was mine to change, I'd stain the outsides of the feet or every other face of the column a gentle red (like the color of padauk or redheart) to offset the white without being overpowering.
