“Chiisana kujira– Little Whale”
This meditation bench or stool was designed with clean lines, and a juxtaposition between the flowing curves and gentle angles found in nature. The piece is stout, strong–yet elegant and agile– and evokes both the strength and fluidity of a small, powerful, yet supple whale. The top and legs are Douglas fir, and features mahogany wedges in the amply-sized through-tenons of the tops of both angled legs. The single straight leg on the other side is held by a continuous dado and is pinned with walnut dowels. I made the top from a single board, but because it was warped and twisted, I cut the board into strips and laminated it back together before planing flat. The arched and curved stretcher that runs between the legs is also Douglas fir accented with two coats of different stain, and is pinned with walnut through the angled legs, and held firmly in the straight leg by another through-mortise and pulled tight with a walnut tusk. It measures 21″L x 12¾”W x 13¾”T.
