Serving Trays
I had this designed and made the first one, working through the construction process. When I was finished, I thought this might make a nice article for Fine Woodworking. Then in my mailbox I get issue 268 which has Heide Martin’s stylish serving tray. You can see the similarity with the breadboard bottom and open ends. I didn’t think the editors would want something this similar. Oh well.
I think the different thicknesses between the sides and ends make the box joint corners one of the nice details of these pieces. Another detail I like is the exposed bottom you can see through the handle. I made the grooves in the sides with a core box bit, so the bottom was beaded to fit. I find this bead a nice contrast with the rectilinear form of the tray.
