280- Walnut and Birch Writing Slope Box
The writing slope, a box that opens to form a surface for writing, was a common possession in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, used not only by travelers and soldiers but also in drawing rooms. Malcolm’s figured walnut version has more than 80 brass dots and some 15 ft. of brass strip inlay, plus an inlaid mother of pearl rose. Once opened it has ink wells, a pen rest, and a hidden compartment.
