To darken the white oak, but preserve the grain clarity, the parts were ammonia fumed. The curves on the base were steam bent 1/8″ strips, all cut from the same board for a seamless glue up. The tall grass is backlit by a recessed LED strip, the electronics of which are housed in a waterproof compartment below the planter. The stone started as a sphere, was cut and ground perfectly flat on all faces but the front and one side and was polished to a mirror finish.
