Gravity’s Rainbow
I had envisioned using contrasting woods for the different elements of the 66″ X 36″ table, but my clients wanted to stick with Eastern walnut for everything, and I’m glad they did, because the blond streaks of sapwood provided all the contrast needed. The base is locked together by six 5/16″ threaded rods, two of which pass through the connecting arch, while the other four are covered by black powder-coated copper pipes and caps. The biggest challenge was drilling the holes through the 11″-wide legs so that they would all line up. I used a dowel jig, but even with a 12″ drill bit, I had to drill from both directions because of the added height of the jig.
