Most store bought desks, and even woodworking desk plans, are designed for a man who’s 5’11 to 6’1″with a desktop that’s designed for writing and not for using a keyboard. For the average woman this isn’t ergonomically comfortable and forces her to raise the chair to the point that a footstool is needed. My client needed a desk for her home office and wanted one fitted just for her.

The original plan was to build an Arts & Crafts style desk but the client wasn’t sure of the fished dimensions. I suggested building a “temporary” platform that we could use to play with the sizing by cutting and shaping it to fit her needs. To start, I brought in an 8′ butcherblock countertop with 2×4 legs that I had roughly screwed together. The client sat at the desk with a keyboard and I cut the legs down till she was happy with the height. During this process the client discovered she really liked the butcherblock and its 8′ expanse. She thought this large area would allow her to spread out her work and still allow for two monitors and a printer on the desk. As the design progressed we decided that instead of an Arts & Crafts desk the butcherblock would look better on a Midcentury Modern base with a few drawers underneath. 

The client is ecstatic with the finished product even though it’s not what we started out to build.
