Pair of Small Round Tables
I try to find designs midway between formal geometry and free form curves. I use the traditional devices of patterned veneer and delicate curved moldings in ways I hope will combine with the design to produce an object people will find charming. This pair of tables are solid yellow birch with birch and walnut veneer. The veneers are quarter sliced with restrained figure and a subtle curl in the walnut. I’m pleased with the way they balance and compliment each other. For me, working with birch requires the right mix of flat surfaces, which are not its forte, and moldings, which it excels at due to its smooth luster. The drawers are just big enough to hold a set of coasters.
