I made this as a wedding gift for my daughter. Its Sapele with a Basswood carving. Finish his Tried and True Danish Oil with 3 over coats of Minwax Tung Oil Finish, and a final coat of microcrystalline wax. I chose swans because they are a symbol of fidelity and mate for life. Seems appropriate for a wedding present.
Nancy’s design used a wall paper background for the open shelf. I chose to use a carving for the background instead. Another change I made from Nancy’s design is the thickness of the back panels. My lower back panel is 3/8″ thick. And the carved panel is 3/4″ thick. Nancy used 5/16″ for her backs. I also recessed magnets and used metal plates to hold the door closed. I drilled 2 sets of holes for an adjustable shelf (shelf not shown) in the bottom. There is a batter powered led disk light mounted inside the fascia.
This was a fun and challenging project. I was drawn to the form and thought it was a unique, yet classical piece. I hope my carving adds something too that will endure the test of time long after I’m gone.
