Christmas Toy Chest
This commission by a family friend was ordered for her grandson for Christmas (2020). The lumber was found at the estate of a mid-century sawyer who tossed any overage in the hayloft of his barn. 8/4 Oak legs and oak framework, held together by mortise and tenon joinery pinned with brass, encase the book matched ash panels. The lid is held flat by my first attempt at breadboard ends hosting curves and profiles to break orthometric tradition. A hexagonal monogram inlay was cut in free hand with a trim router fenced one line at a time with a straight edge in a process I like to call “analog CNC”. Brass lid stays ensure the safety of small fingers and allow the lid to stay in any position for safe and easy access to the toys inside. The surface is finished with Tung Oil and a coat of paste wax.
