The ‘Wedge’ Coffee Table
This unique table was a way to help me understand wood movement. The top is made of roughly 96 pieces of white oak each cut with 86.7 degree angle on both sides. The 2 layers are joined together in a brick pattern for added strength.
It turns out that the top diameter has grown and shrunk together and nothing has broken apart! About 1/8″ gap was allowed for the glass top.
The top is joined to the base with false foxtail wedges that cover 3-1/2″ bolts & washers to allow a ‘significant’ amount of movement. The addition of the double wedged tenons through the legs with walnut pegs is where we get the name. Lastly, the centre is joined with a ‘sliding dovetail half lapped’ joint – a nice detail to see through the glass top.
