The Lock Box
I designed and made The Lock Box for a contest, hosted by Shaper Tools in order to win a Shaper Origin. While the verdict is still out, the box speaks for itself as a marriage of form and function. The box consists of a curved form, allowing for moveable tambour sections to circumvent the whole box. While not just a gimmick, the tambour sections actually hide a “key” mechanism, which when aligned properly (utilizing the visual alignment of the ebony pieces) allow a cam lock style brass pin to rotate within its housing, revealing a thumbhole to take the lid off. The box is made using techniques such as kerf bending, veneering, as well as a fair amount of time spent hunched over a router table. No CNC work was used when making this box, just old fashioned templates and careful sanding. The materials used were some beautiful Claro Walnut for the lid, quartersawn walnut veneer for the interior, Ambrosia maple for the tambour parts and finally, Ebony for the handle and the tambour “key” pieces
