Traditional Clock with Inset Tile
I lucked into some pre-embargo Cuban mahogany many years back. My father built several pieces of a bedroom set from it, and I decided a mantle clock would be a good use for some of the remainder.
It uses a mechanical 8-day movement mounted to a veneered face panel that was recessed into the lower rail during assembly, then slid into a dado in the top and held in place with wedges while the glue dried (top joins to sides with tapered sliding dovetails, so the face had to be in place before the top went on.
The tile is from Pewabic Pottery, a Detroit landmark for over a hundred years.
Mahogany, birdseye maple, waxed shellac finish.
Approximately 20″ x 13″ x 6 1/2″
