Art Deco console radio
A floor standing internet radio, with dimensions of 25 x 20 x 38″ high. Based on the Pacific Elite Radio manufactured in 1935 by the Radio Corporation of New Zealand, it uses shop-sawn koa and madrone veneers and purple heart. The original unit used the best then available electronics and, with the shortwave band, boasted in its advertisements “clear and natural reproduction from stations all over the world.” Similarly, the piece I built connects to approximately 30,000 internet radio stations via the website radio.garden and, hopefully, reprises some of the romance of radio listening now with upgraded, static-free, stereophonic, audio.
