Keepsake box with surprise inside
I made this jewelry box for my wife as a Valentines Day gift. All the joints are hand cut and the lid was bent making fine kerf cuts. The bend in the lid panel is held by fitting the panel into curved mortised brackets on the ends. Inside the box are two trays that nest together and are indexed with a natural knot that I incorporated into a partition in the lower tray. The top of the knot fits into a small mortise in the bottom of the upper tray keeping the trays aligned as they are removed or put back into the box. The trays are designed to be removed as a single unit via a carved knob that attaches to the bottom tray partitions and protrudes through the upper tray. The upper tray cannot be comfortably removed separately. Both trays must be removed at the same time via the carved knob to reveal a mounted butterfly under a glass panel that is set in a groove cut into each inner wall of the box. The butterfly was caught by my son many years earlier and preserved waiting for the right project to come along.
